Hyperknowledge representation: challenges and promises

چکیده

Hyperknowledge is formed as a system of sets of interlinked concepts, much in the same way as hypertext is built with interlinked text strings; then hyperknowledgefunctions would be constructs which link concepts / systems of concepts in some predetermined or wanted way. Under hyperknowledge representation we mean the identification (or approximation) of hyperknowledge-functions in order to explain, describe and predict the behavoir of the real-life system. Depending on the environment one can use first-order logic, production systems, semantic nets, frames, fuzzy sets, neural networks, neural fuzzy systems, Bayes’ rules, rough sets, belief networks, certainty factors, incidence calculus, modal logics, cognitive maps, etc. In this paper we will briefly address the following methods of (hyper)knowledge representation: • First-order logic provides a language for expressing knowledge and principles for manipulating expressions from this language. • In production systems the knowledge of experts is expressed in the form of crisp IF-THEN rules, and production rules are treated as independent pieces of knowledge. • Fuzzy logic performs an inference mechanism under cognitive uncertainty, where the uncertainty is represented by linguistic variables whose terms are characterized by fuzzy subsets or possibility distributions. • Neural networks can be considered as simplified mathematical models of brainlike systems and they function as parallel distributed computing networks. They can learn new associations, new functional dependencies and new patterns. • Neural fuzzy systems incorporate the concept of fuzzy logic into the neural networks to enable a system dealing with cognitive uncertainties in a manner more like humans. • Cognitive maps can represent crisp cause-effect relationships which are perceived to exist among the elements of a given environment. Fuzzy cognitive maps are fuzzy signed directed graphs with feedbacks, and they model the world as a collection of concepts and causal relations between concepts. ∗Presently Donner Visiting Chair at Åbo Akademi University. †in: P.Walden, M.Brännback, B.Back and H.Vanharanta eds., The Art and Science of DecisionMaking, Åbo Akademi University Press, Åbo, 1996 61-89.

Adaptive Fuzzy Cognitive Maps for Hyperknowledge Representation in Strategy Formation Process

In [6] Carlsson demonstrated that all the pertinent conceptual constructs of strategic management theory can be represented with a knowledge based support (KBS)-system with hyperknowledge properties. Furthermore, he shows that cognitive maps can be used to trace the impact of the support and to generalize the experiences of the users. In this paper we will show that the effectiveness and useful...

Validity and utility of a hyperknowledge-based financial benchmarking system

Computer technology is transforming strategic management and swalegic decision making. One important area of strategic management work, from a competitive viewpoint. is benchmarking. Competitive benchmarking is a company-internal process in which the activities of a given company are measured against the besr practices of thz best-in-class companies using financial andtor non-&an&l yardsticks. ...

Transforming Disciplinary Traditions; Comment on “Problems and Promises of Health Technologies: The Role of Early Health Economic Modeling”

Grutters et al show that economic assessments can inform the development of new health technologies at an early stage. This is an important contribution to health services and policy research, which implies a “shift away” from the more traditional forms of academic health economic modeling. Because transforming established disciplinary traditions is both valuable and de...

On the Improvement of Strategic Investment Decisions and Active Decision Support Systems

Strategic investment decisions (SID’s) are more easily understood and controlled than most of the other activities undertaken within the framework of strategic management. Hyperknowledge support systems have been used as problem solving and decision support environments for strategic management and for strategic decision making in a number of industries in recent years. It appears that the logi...

A Hyperknowledge Environment to Support Strategic Decision-Making

This paper focuses on the design of a computer-based system for supporting executive decision-making, beyond the mere retrieval and processing of data and information. We examine the extent to which, by using the hyperknowledge framework for decision support systems, executive support systems can be made to emulate human perceptual and judgmental processes. Based on an appreciation of the cogni...
